Dear Friend,

This Labor Day Weekend, we are reminded of how important it is for us as Democrats to protect labor and workers across our state.

In the midterm elections last year, the Republicans ran on an agenda that hurts Granite State workers and their families. In March, the GOP House and Senate voted down several pieces of legislation that aimed to increase the minimum wage from its current level at $7.25 an hour. New Hampshire is one out of 31 states that does not have a minimum wage higher than the federal minimum, and has one of the lowest wages in New England.

Raising the minimum wage is a priority for the Democrats. Governor Maggie Hassan addressed the need to raise the minimum wage during her inauguration, and leaders in both the Senate and the House share this goal.

For the third time, former House Speaker Republican Bill O'Brien spearheaded so called Right-to-Work legislation this year. These laws would prohibit union contracts from requiring agency fees from employees who aren’t members of the union but are covered by the contract. In practice, they would reduce wages for workers and strip them of their right to engage in collective bargaining with their employers. Although the bill was voted down in the Senate, it is clear that the GOP House does not look out for the interests of Granite State workers.

I hope everyone is able to go out and enjoy the end of summer in our beautiful state over this long weekend.

Steve Shurtleff
Democratic Leader
